Golden Globe Nominees, Hits and Misses

Published by cfloud at 5:45 pm under Movies and TV Edit This

The Golden Globe nominations were announced yesterday, and to be honest I was pleased…for the most part. First off, Kevin Connolly who plays E on Entourage is finally being recognized. Unlike Kevin Dillon of Johnny Drama fame, he will not be completely overshadowed by Jeremy Piven’s super agent spaz Ari Gold because Connolly and Piven will be in separate categories. A quick side note, Ari is not a supporting character, I don’t care what you say. He’s as much a lead in that show as any of them. But let Connolly have a shot, then next year make him a lead.

Back to the Globes, Frost/Nixon is getting treated pretty well I think. I thought it was good movie, and it was well executed, but the meat of the film took about a half hour to get going. I was honestly a bit bored before the actual interview started to take place. It deserves a few, certainly for Frank Langella doing Nixon, and Ron Howard’s direction was pretty great. But best score and best screenplay? The interviews were the best part and those were already written…not to mention the great quips from Nixon and the hilarious late night phone call, all of which are based on actual things Nixon said. I don’t remember the music. Now, some may say that is a good thing for a movie, just as they would say not noticing the direction is good. But this is the Golden Globes, not NYU film school. Therefore, if I can’t remember a single note from the score, then I don’t think it’s worthy of a globe nod.

Also, nothing for Synedoche, New York? Since when did paralyzing self deconstruction and laugh out loud dark/weird comedy stop being award worthy? Oh that’s right, it never was. Little Miss Sunshine was closest, and then Juno ruined it by being too easy.

Anyway, all in all I agreed with most of the nominations, and I’m looking forward to the show. Tune in for predictions and results.
